What has 360 legs, 360 arms, fourteen wooden crosses and one body? That would
be the 2008 Erasing the Lines Summer Work Camp acting as the body of Christ in and around Kinston, N.C. from June 23rd through 27th. With over 140 youth and 40 adults participating in this year's program, the largest number ever, the ETL camp took on service projects throughout the city of Kinston and at The Refuge ranging from construction of wheelchair ramps and camp shelters to assisting with vacation bible school and attending to the needs of the elderly at The Day Break center; from serving food at Mary's soup kitchen, to repainting the benches and trashcans along Queen Street; from working in city parks to providing a community picnic. It was an awesome week!
The devotional study for the week was centered on Psalm 24 and was tied into the theme, "God of This City" based on the current hit song by Chris Tomlin. College-aged small group leaders guided the youth through their daily devotional study during a break at lunch time and again following supper. The testimonies of these youth at closing affirmed the power of the Holy Spirit working in these small groups.
In a special act of praise, each group wrote their praises and thanks on a piece of lumber. These praises were then encased in a large wooden cross that will be erected at The Refuge on a point overlooking the lake.
On Thursday evening, the traditional community picnic was held in the parking lot of Queen’s Street United Methodist Church with over 700 people from throughout the community joining together for fellowship and a covered dish meal. Everyone was treated to a terrific concert by the Present Truth Ministry Band.
The week wrapped up on June 27th with a closing ceremony attended by families, friends, and community leaders. Smiles, hugs and tears marked the faces of those participating as they said their goodbyes and loaded up their gear....already talking about next year's ETL. The greatest work accomplished was not that of the groups around the city, it was the work of the Holy Spirit on the hearts of all who participated in the fifth ETL experience.
Erasing the Lines continues to receive acclaim from the Mayor and Chief of Public Safety in Kinston for its success in breaking down barriers and focusing on the needs of the city. Officials in Greenville and Wilson are looking at the program for feasibility in their respective cities.
Son Set Ministries is proud to sponsor Erasing the Lines under the continued leadership of Sammy Hudson, Terry Barnes, Cindy Nicholson, Justin Combs, Ashley Gower, and John Robert Harris and the many others who graciously give of their time and talents.
